Environmental Research in the Albemarle-Pamlico RegionClick here for APNEP's research reports “The search for knowledge about the impact of human societies on our environment has gained importance as rapid population growth and economic development intensify the stresses human beings place on the biosphere and ecosystems. Advances in biology, computer sciences, and techniques for sensing biological, physical, and chemical phenomena on, below, and above the Earth’s surface could help us develop a more sustainable relationship with Earth and its natural resources…There is a lot of practical value in learning how natural systems work; how human activities and other influences perturb these systems; what causes these perturbations; how changes in one system affect other systems; and how knowledge may guide well-informed choices about means of transforming or restoring ecologic systems.” (Omenn 2006:1697). Research is necessary to promote effectiveness and efficiency at all phases of the sustainability cycle, including the improvement of assessment techniques and the monitoring done to support these assessments. Research that is necessary to support assessment and monitoring activities include (CRMSW 2000:10-11):
We invite you to read about past and current environmental research projects in the Albemarle-Pamlico region and the scientists and other technical analysts who were/are conducting them. We hope this information will promote and enhance collaboration among scientists in our region and result in interdisciplinary knowledge that furthers our understanding of the Albemarle-Pamlico region’s environment. If you are aware of other research activities that should be included, please send your suggestions to the APNEP Program Scientist. Footnote: Omenn GS. 2006.
